Studying Myths and Creating Myths

Image
The experience of both creating a myth and studying a myth was interesting and fun. I am quite unfamiliar with myths. While I know the general idea of some popular myths, I have never read them. It was a fun experience to read and learn about myths and then to collaborate on a presentation about them. It expanded my knowledge of myths, including how they are created, the archetypes within them, the general framework, their purposes, and the role of culture in their existence. Studying myths certainly enhanced my experience of creating a myth. Since I had a better understanding of what a myth entails and its components, it was a bit easier to develop ideas for a myth. It made me think of the natural phenomena I encounter in my life and ponder on. I knew from the get-go that I did not want to employ a hero’s journey in my myth, as that framework did not resonate strongly with me. Hence, I ended up creating an origin myth that truly resonated with me.   What I learned from studying my...

Poetry Analysis vs. Creating Poetry

Photo Credit: iStock by Getty Images Switching from writing about poetry to creating poetry was a very interesting experience for me. I don’t have much experience with creative writing. I’ve only taken one creative writing class in my academic journey, which was a short story writing class at a community college. I’ve never written poetry before. On the other hand, I have lots of experience in academic writing and analyzing poetry. As English majors, this is simply second nature to us.   I did not find any direct similarities between writing about poetry and writing poetry itself. Looking at key details in a popular poem made it clear to me how to provide readers with an experience that evokes certain emotions, memories, thoughts, and more. Therefore, when I was working on my own poems, I made sure to use words that truly immerse readers in that moment, not just describe ...

Introduction and Media Technology in Teaching

Photo Credit: iStock by Getty Images  Hey everyone, my name is Natalie, and I’m currently a student in the English Subject Matter (ESM) Program at Cal State University, Northridge (CSUN), and an aspiring teacher. I grew up as a bookworm, reading so many novels. However, my love for literature and writing did not take off until high school. I had the privilege of having such wonderful English teachers in high school, who helped nurture my love for reading and writing and piqued my interest in teaching. If it weren’t for their teaching and its impact on me, I would not have been inspired to become a teacher myself. Beyond studying, working, and career aspirations, I am a very active person and always doing something. When I have free time, I’m either rock climbing, hiking, trail running, or even simply hitting the gym. I’m going to be running my first half-marathon this Saturday, and I’m excited.   As I work toward my career goal of teaching, it is evident that the use of media ...
